Complete the following steps to create your own Google Maps™ workout!
Fill Out the Workout Details
After you’ve logged in, hover over Create at the top, then click Map Based Workout.
Next, name your workout, select the activity type (run or cycle), and select the date you want to complete your workout. (If you don’t select a date, your workout will automatically schedule on your next available day.)
Also, you can click More Options and a Workout Description box will appear. Here, you can add a quick reminder of what the workout entails.
When you’re done, click Next.
Draw Your Route
On this screen, search any location, then click on the map to start drawing. When you connect one point to another, the line will appear in a bright aqua-blue color.
You can use the Map Builders Tools on the left-hand side to customize your route. Here’s a quick overview of what they each do:
Close Loop—Takes you back to the start on the fastest route.
Undo—Clears your most recent change.
Reset—Clears all changes.
Snap to Road—This toggle defaults to ON. If you want to stick to paved roads, leave it on. (Keep in mind, it will work on some dirt roads.) If you want to go off road, turn it off.
Out & Back—Takes you back to the start the exact way you came.
Street View Availability—This will show you where Street View is available in a light periwinkle-violet color. If you draw a map outside of these lines, you may get a gray screen during your workout. You can also check the bottom right of your map for a Street View image.
Set The Speed
Once you’ve made your starting and finishing points, you should see a new button appear under Map Builder Tools called Graph. If you click on it, a line graph will appear for you to customize your speed.
Click on the top graph to set your speed points. You can always click and drag to adjust if you misclick. (If you don’t change the speed, it will default to 1 mph.)
If you want to get back to your map, just click the Map button.
The bottom graph will show an overlay of your speed, incline, and elevation so you can better determine how easy or difficult the workout will be. (The incline and elevation is determined from your map location.)
To manually enter exact distance and speed points, just click any of the circle points on the graph.
When you’re all done, click Next.
Create Your Workout
After you’ve clicked Next, you’ll be sent to a summary screen to review your workout details. If you need to make changes, click Edit. If everything looks good, click Create.
After you click Create, a green banner with a success message will appear at the top, confirming your workout has been created. If you want to create another workout, click the Create More button in the banner.
To see your workout details, click the View Workout Details button. You’ll be taken to this screen:
Here, you can either share your workout or schedule the workout again for another date.
You can also find your workout by following these steps:
- Hover over Menu at the top, then click Workouts.
- Click Created in the black bar.
- Then, click on your workout name to view its details. Again, you can either share your workout or schedule the workout again for another date.
